Chargers Women's Soccer Starts Season Undefeated with Three Straight Road Wins, Eyeing a Return to the State Championship
CYPRESS, CA – The 2024 Cypress Chargers Women's Soccer team is showing no signs of slowing down, opening their season with three impressive road victories. After a runner-up finish in the 2023 3C2A State Championship, the Chargers are determined to make another deep run, and their early performances suggest they are well on their way.
The Chargers kicked off their season on August 23rd with a commanding 4-2 win against San Diego Miramar. Returners Amber Mielke and Itzel Ramirez set the tone, teaming up for the first goal of the season. After the Jets equalized, Ramirez provided another assist, this time to freshman Madi Cardena, giving Cypress a 2-1 lead heading into halftime. In the second half, Jasmin Martinez took control, assisting Luna Khazem to extend the lead to 3-1 before Khazem returned the favor, setting up Martinez for the Chargers' fourth goal.
The Chargers continued their winning streak over the weekend of August 29th at the New Balance Showcase hosted by Ventura College. Cypress shut out Santa Barbara 3-0 and then edged out San Francisco City 2-1 to remain undefeated. Against Santa Barbara, newcomers Jasmin De La Torre and Jessica Rosalino Vicente made an impact, scoring the first two goals, while sophomore Crystal Moreno sealed the win with a third goal. In the matchup against San Francisco City, Mielke once again opened the scoring with an assist from sophomore Megan Alcantara. Though San Francisco City leveled the match at 1-1 in the second half, freshman Alma Manzano delivered the game-winning goal in the 90th minute, securing the Chargers' perfect start to the season.
With 14 returners and 15 freshmen, this year's squad is a balanced mix of experience and fresh talent, poised to make a strong run in the 2024 season. The coaching staff and the team have their sights set on returning to the state tournament and are off to a fantastic start on that journey.
