The Chargers End their Postseason in the Quarterfinals of the CCCAA State Tournament
Cypress, CA - Cypress women’s basketball (22-8, 9-3 OEC) fell short against Butte College (27-3, 9-1 CONF) in the quarter final game of the CCCAA women’s basketball tournament, 72-48.
LEMOORE, CA - Cypress women's basketball (22-8, 9-3 OEC) fell short against Butte College (27-3, 9-1 CONF) in the quarter final game of the CCCAA women's basketball tournament, 72-48.
The Chargers put up the first basket of the game from a jump shot by JoAnna Stroud. After a back and forth battle, Cypress gained a six-point lead early in the first quarter. Thao Truong made a layup to keep the team on top after a momentum gain for Butte. Both teams played tough throughout the first quarter, and kept the game very physical. Cypress remained on top throughout the entirety of the first quarter, which ended with a score of 16-15.
Alexcia Alvarez led the Chargers in the second quarter with a fast break layup to extend the team's lead. Then, Butte took their first lead of the game after a hard foul that led two made free throws for the Roadrunners. Ashley Hawkins responded with a coast-to-coast layup that kept the Chargers in the game after a scoring drought from both teams. Butte went on a scoring run at the end of the quarter, and remained on top at half-time with a score of 22-31, Butte.
JoAnna Stroud made a highly contested layup in the start of the third quarter for the Chargers to cut the Butte lead to eight. However, Butte's offense picked up quickly and extended their lead to 14. Hawkins responded with 5 straight points for Cypress to gain back some momentum. Butte ended the third quarter with an 11-point lead.
Hawkins cut the lead under 10 points with back-to-back points to start the fourth quarter. Stroud continued the run for the Chargers with a great offensive play. The Roadrunners, however, answered quickly and shut down the Charger's momentum with a scoring run of their own and made it a 16-point lead. Cypress was unable to convert offensively for 6 minutes in the fourth quarter, which allowed Butte to extend their lead. In the end, the Chargers came up short in a hard fought game against the Roadrunners.
Ashley Hawkins had 27 points for the Chargers, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. JoAnna Stroud had 8 points and 5 rebounds. Alexcia Alvarez had 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
