CYPRESS, CA - Cypress College Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Brittany Imaku as the school's new Head Women's Basketball Coach, according to Athletic Director Wes McCurtis. Legendary Coach Margaret Mohr has stepped down from her position as Head Coach but will remain on staff as an Assistant Coach. "I am excited for Coach B to take the next step and lead our women's basketball program," said Wes McCurtis. "She brings tremendous knowledge, experience, and an unmatched energy to the Athletics Department. I have no doubt that she will uphold and continue to build upon the winning tradition that Cypress Women's Basketball is known for both on and off the court."
Coach Brittany attended Cypress College as a student-athlete from 2003 to 2005 where she nearly set the career assist record, ranking second all-time. Imaku led the Chargers to a State Title in 2005 as Captain of the Women's Basketball team. She was selected First Team All-Conference and named Most Valuable Player of the State Tournament. After Cypress, Imaku transferred to San Jose State and obtained the single season record in assists. She graduated in 2008 with a BA in Child Development and completed her Master's Degree in Kinesiology at Azusa Pacific. Imaku would then return to Cypress in 2014, where she served 8 years as an assistant coach for the Chargers, helping lead the program to winning three of the possible six Orange Empire Conference Championships during that span. She was inducted into the Cypress College Athletics Hall of Fame for her achievements as a student-athlete in 2017.
"I am excited to be back," said Coach Imaku. "This is a dream come true and it is all thanks to Coach Mohr for allowing me to have this opportunity and her trust in me to lead this program. I'm not afraid of working hard and I want my players to match that by continuing to grow and get better each and every day. We are building a legacy and I want each of my players to understand that they need to stand in their truth for whatever that is because we are family," she added.
Cypress Women's Basketball is set to begin their 2022-23 campaign under new Head Coach Brittany Imaku at home on Thursday, November 3 at 7pm when they take on El Camino College.
