Chargers Take Game 1 Over Ventura in Five-Innings
Cypress Cruises to 9-1 Win in Five Innings to Open SoCal Regional Series
CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College Chargers opened the first round of the 2025 SoCal Regional Playoffs in dominant fashion, cruising past the Ventura College Pirates 9-1 in a five-inning mercy-rule victory on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Chargers (32-9) take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
The Chargers set the tone early when Nanea Kyle drew a leadoff walk and later scored the game's first run on a Carly Parmenter RBI single to right field. After Ventura tied it in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly, Cypress responded with authority in the third inning.
Mickayla Galaviz highlighted a three-run frame with a two-run double, while Tina Payne added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 4-1. Cypress then erupted for five more runs in the bottom of the fifth, sparked by a bunt RBI single from Madylyn Wynia and clutch hits from Jayda Maldonado, Amanda Johansen, and Kyle, who finished with two runs scored, two stolen bases, and an RBI double.
In the circle, Haley Tucker was efficient and composed, throwing a complete game three-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.
The Chargers tallied seven hits and took advantage of two Pirate errors while playing error-free defense. Cypress will look to close out the series and punch their ticket to the Super Regionals tomorrow in Game 2.
