Cypress College Athletics Celebrates Historic 2024–25 Season with Annual Banquet and Honors

Chargers claim Chancellor’s Cup, send 22+ student-athletes to the next level, and celebrate record-setting achievements across 10 postseason teams.

CYPRESS, CA — Cypress College Athletics capped off an extraordinary 2024–25 season with its annual end-of-year banquet, recognizing the accomplishments of student-athletes, coaches, and staff who helped elevate the program to new heights. With an electric atmosphere filled with Charger pride, this year's celebration was one for the record books.

This season, the Chargers achieved unprecedented success:

  • 9 teams recorded winning seasons

  • 10 teams qualified for postseason play, including Baseball, Softball, Men's & Women's Basketball, Men's & Women's Soccer, Men's & Women's Water Polo, Men's Golf, and Men's Swim & Dive

  • Overall department record: 201-97-11

  • 41 All-Orange Empire Conference selections

  • 6 All-State selections

  • 4 All-American honors

  • 4 Coach of the Year awards

  • 2024–25 Chancellor's Cup Champions

Adding to this year's success, 22 Cypress student-athletes (and counting) have already committed to continuing their academic and athletic careers at the four-year level.

Awards and Highlights:

The banquet featured a special highlight reel, curated by the Cypress Sports Information team, and individual honors recognizing standout performances and character-driven leadership:

  • Female Athlete of the Year: Itzel Ramirez (Women's Soccer) – OEC Offensive MVP, All-State selection, Team Captain, and OEC Character Champion.

 

  • Male Athlete of the Year: Evan Rolbiecki (Baseball) – OEC Player of the Year, All-State honoree, and clutch postseason performer with a walk-off home run in the SoCal Regional Final.

 

  • Team of the Year: Baseball – 39-12 overall record, first OEC title since 2009, and first 3C2A State Championship Tournament appearance since 2016.

 

  • Coaching Staff of the Year: Baseball Coaching Staff, led by Head Coach Anthony Hutting.

 

  • Best Individual Performance: James Christian (Men's Basketball) – 20-point playoff performance in Cypress' first home playoff game since 1997.

 

  • Charger Award: Itzel Ramirez (Women's Soccer) – Recognized for her excellence on the field, in the classroom (3.8 GPA), and in the community, and recipient of a $5,000 scholarship from the Cypress College Foundation.

 

  • Scholar Athlete Awards (Sponsored by former Cypress College Athletic Director, Diane Henry):

    • Dempsey Wood (Softball) – 3.9 GPA, accepted to UCLA, pursuing a career in law.

    • Higgy Katoa (Men's Basketball) – 4.0 GPA, will continue his career at Occidental or La Verne.

The event also included a heartfelt moment as Christy Montenegro, a member of the Admissions & Records team, was honored with the Athletics Service Award for her continued dedication to supporting student-athletes through academic processes.
